International Day of Friendship
Today is International Day of Friendship. It was originally set up by the United Nations to bring people together around the world. There are many reasons this day is important to our care home, due to the various health benefits companionship can have in later life.
Something we love to see is when people make friends at our care home, as it’s someone they can talk to on a daily basis and take part in the various activities that we offer together. Friendship is very healthy for the brain; it may be obvious that friendship helps offset loneliness, but what you may not realise is that loneliness can be a serious problem in later life, not just on your emotional health, but also on your physical health. Age UK - https://www.ageuk.org.uk/ - has released various statistics that suggest that loneliness can be as dangerous as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
But friendship just doesn’t come from the other residents. All our staff take the time to get to know the people they are caring for, so they can respond to their individual needs, just as a friend would. It is this bespoke care that comes from the heart that leads to real friendships between our residents and all the staff – not just the carers, but the domestic staff, the kitchen team and the admin staff. Whether it’s a nice chat in the corridor or inviting someone to take part in an event we’re holding, it’s important to us that everyone feels included.
But there is something that’s even better than friendship – and that’s family. So we’re delighted when we receive feedback like this:

We love our residents to feel their among friends – and we celebrate that on International ay of Friendship. But even better is when they feel at home!
We want to help tackle loneliness and it’s days like International Day of Friendship which help bring awareness to the problems some people may face, especially in later life.
